
...are small Polish Catholic roadside shrines. Think of them as small wayside chapels. Found mostly in Central Wisconsin, they mark crossroads in areas of Polish settlement. They can be anything from an elaborate brick structures to a simple metal cross.Their purpose and strategic placement (in a place where two roads intersect) is to protect travelers from evil(demons, imps, Satan, Michigan Fans). For me they belong to that
large family of trailside markers that dot rural Wisconsin since ancient times. From
Indian Petraglyphs, marker mounds, burial mounds to the modern highway numbering system which originated in the Badger State - we have more than any other state and they were here first.(Don't get me started with "firsts"...we can leave any other five states in the dust.)
